Meditation

The biggest question, which I hear most frequently, is “How do I meditate?”    It seems as if in this day and age of stress, worry and rushing around that we (I speak as a member of the Western world) are starting to realize the healing benefits and the need to mediate.  Healing as in, soothing for your soul and helping you to deal with stress which is a huge factor in physical illness.

Meditating may seem like a difficult thing to do but it is actually quite easy, I feel that we just put too much effort or worry into how to do it.  And I will be quick to include myself in that claim.

There are also different ways to mediate depending on if you are a visual, audio or physical person.

There are a few simple ways to start off for easy audio meditation, which puts you in the right frame of mind.  The trance-like state is your subconscious (theta state) where, all things that are said, are true.  This is why, if you are telling yourself something in this state, it is; like hypnosis.  This is the best time for your positive affirmations, your forward thinking thoughts for the future etc.; one is a guided meditation and one is instrumental or tonal mediation music.

Guided meditations can be found for all different topics, relieving stress, releasing anxiety, balancing charkas, relaxation…. The possibilities are endless.  They consist of a person speaking & guiding you into the meditative state and through it.

Meditation music is not an easy one for beginners, however you may find the music soothing to lull you off into the next level.  I simply sit still, listen to the music and let the mind focus on it.  A common complaint is that the mind always wanders off, and it will, simply bring it back to the music and focus on that & your breathing.  Let everyday worries leave your mind and simply be.

Another one for beginners that may be a bit easier is a countdown into a trance-like state.  The countdown method, which I recently learned at an Intro to Meditation workshop is as follows:

Picture your ideal relaxation spot or image  ( beach scene, nature hiking trail, pond etc). Then start like a slideshow, visualize the number 25, then visualize your “scene”, visualize the number 24, then visualize your “scene”.  Continue to the count of 1 and at that point, you should be in a relaxed subconscious state at which time you can meditate.

A visual example of mediation is candle meditation, where you sit comfortably in front of a candle, focusing on the flame as your mind drifts off.  Just be careful that you don’t nod off and have an unattended flame.

Meditation can be done anywhere that you feel comfortable enough to relax and drift off. Sometimes it is nice to have a dedicated spot in which you can meditate; comfortable clothing and some time on your hands, where you will not be interrupted.   Turn off the cell phones, the home phones, the computers and take time for you.  Pure and unadulterated.   Even if you can only find 15 minutes a day, to start, start with that.  No time spent on YOU, is ever wasted.

So… take time, find your quiet space in your mind….  and be happy, be you and no one else….. because you are GREAT!
